Dear Colleagues,
The Departments of Botany and Chemistry at the University of British
Columbia are conducting a search for a junior level (Assistant
Professor) Canadian Research Chair (CRC) in the general research area
of Plant Natural Products. The Canadian Research Chair program
(http://www.chairs.gc.ca/) has been established by the Canadian
Federal Government with the purpose of attracting and/or retaining
outstanding researchers within the Canadian university system. The
successful candidate, who will be jointly appointed in the
Departments of Botany (http://www.botany.ubc.ca) and Chemistry
(http://www.chem.ubc.ca), will be expected to establish a vigorous
research program in plant or fungal natural products research. We
will consider excellent applicants in a broad range of areas
characterized as Plant Natural Products. We particularly welcome
applications in the areas of natural product biosynthesis, metabolic
engineering, chemical ecology, biotechnology, and genomics. He/She
will be expected to participate in the educ
This is an exciting opportunity for a young researcher, as these
Chairs bring with them considerable prestige and additional resources
beyond those normally provided for starting faculty. The
cross-departmental affiliation of this Chair will provide access to a
wide range of facilities in both departments, including plant growth
facilities, facilities in support of DNA sequencing and genomics, and
world class NMR and mass spectroscopy facilities.
The Departments of Botany and Chemistry are located in physically
adjacent buildings on the UBC campus, and members of both departments
participate in numerous research initiatives, including the Protein
Engineering Network of Centres of Excellence, Genome Canada, and the
Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics.
Suitable Canadian as well as non-Canadian candidates are encouraged
to apply, since normal Immigration Canada requirements have been
waived in filling CRC positions. Interested individuals should send a
CV, list of publications, description of proposed research and
interests and the names of three referees to Carl Douglas, Head,
Department of Botany, 3529-6270 University Boulevard, Vancouver, BC,
V6T 1Z4, Canada. Screening of applicants will begin March 1, 2001,
and continue until the position is filled.
