A position is available immediately to work on pre-mRNA splicing in
Arabidopsis. This work is funded by an NSF 2010 grant.

Position Summary:
A Research Associate (postdoc) or Research Assistant will be responsible
for conducting research on a NSF-funded Arabidopsis 2010 project to study
pre-mRNA splicing in Arabidopsis. The goal of this project is to
identify and characterize exonic splicing enhancer sequences in
Arabidopsis. Although splicing enhancers are likely to function in
splice site selection in many plant genes, and to contribute to the
regulation of alternative splicing, plant splicing enhancers have not yet
been described in detail. A high-throughput investigation of the
activity and tissue-specificity of splicing enhancers in Arabidopsis
should facilitate genome annotation and improve our understanding of
alternative splicing. The project requires production of transgenic
Arabidopsis lines, examination of splicing at the RNA level, and
documentation of marker gene expression patterns.

Qualifications:
The candidate should be motivated and very organized, and must have a
demonstrated ability to conduct molecular biology research. Research
Associates will have a Ph.D. and relevant experience. Research
Assistants would normally have a Bachelor's degree in molecular biology,
biochemistry, or plant biology, and at least one year of additional and
relevant laboratory experience or a Masters degree.

Environment:
The University of Maryland Dept. of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics
has a dynamic, growing, and well-funded group of 5 laboratories
conducting molecular genetics research with the model plant Arabidopsis
thaliana.
