POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION
REGULATION OF PROTEIN PHOSPHATASE ACTIVITY BY THE RCN1 PROTEIN

A postdoctoral position is available for a period of up to three years
to study the role of the Arabidopsis RCN1 gene product in regulating the
activity of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A). The RCN1 gene encodes a
regulatory A subunit of PP2A, a highly conserved heteromeric
serine/threonine phosphatase.  Loss of RCN1 function leads to reduced
PP2A activity in vivo and in vitro.  Plants carrying the rcn1 mutation
exhibit defects in differential cell elongation responses such as
gravitropism.  These growth defects are correlated with altered auxin
transport in rcn1 seedlings, and in seedlings treated with phosphatase
inhibitors, implicating PP2A activity in the regulation of auxin
transport.  Currently we seek to define the factors that specify RCN1
function and we will further characterize the role of RCN1 in regulating
auxin transport.  Candidates must have a strong background in molecular
