Postdoctoral Research Associate Position
Rutgers University
New Brunswick, NJ

A postdoctoral research associate position is available at the Biotech
Center at Cook College/Rutgers University to study the effect of ribosome
inactivating proteins on mRNA stability in plants and in yeast. Pokeweed
antiviral protein (PAP) is a ribosome inactivating protein with
broad-spectrum activity against viral and fungal pathogens. It depurinates
the highly conserved sarcin/ricin loop of the large rRNA. We recently
showed that PAP binds to the cap structure on cellular and viral RNAs and
inhibits translation by depurinating these RNAs downstream of the cap
structure (Hudak et al. 2002 RNA, 8:1148-1159). PAP affects mRNA stability
in vivo and regulates its expression by destabilizing its own mRNA (Parikh
et al., 2002 Jour. Biol. Chem. 277:41428-41437). We recently showed that
the effect of PAP on the stability of its own mRNA can be dissociated from
depurination of the sarcin/ricin loop of rRNA (Parikh et al., 2002 Jour.
Biol. Chem. 277:41428-41437). A postdoctoral research associate is sought
to characterize the mechanism by which PAP affects mRNA stability. The
project will involve DNA microarray analysis to characterize expression
profiles of yeast and transgenic plants expressing PAP mutants and
identification of the cellular targets of PAP. Qualifications include a
Ph.D. in a related field, experience with RNA biochemistry and molecular
biology and demonstration of an active publication record. Please send the
