Ph.D. Studentship
Metabolic Regulation of Gene Expression in higher plants

This is a Ph.D. studentship sponsored by the University of Wales Bangor
that is open to EEC Nationals.

Several different types of metabolites, particularly sugars and amino
acids, are well known to be able to signal changes in gene expression to
influence their metabolism. What remains unknown are the signalling
properties of the many hundreds of metabolites, such as organic acids and
secondary metabolites, within a plant. The student will use both
metabolite and gene expression profiling of Arabidopsis to study the
relationship of among metabolite levels and gene expression events.

The annual stipend for 2003/2004 is =A39000 (~13.000 Euros) and increases to
=A39500 for the 2004/2005 academic year. The funding level for the 2005/200=
academic year has not been set yet, but it will be no less than =A39500. Al=
academic fees are paid by the university. There will be =A3500/yr for the
student to use for conference attendance.

Interested candidates should request an application package and provide a
CV with the contact details of two academic referees and a brief statement
of research experience. The candidate must hold a Baccalaureate or
appropriate higher educational degree to be eligible. Suitable
undergraduate or other research experience in plant molecular biology would
be beneficial. Any potential candidate should be aware that the working
language of the laboratory is English. Please send documents or requests
for more information, to Dr. Mark A. Hooks, School of Biological Sciences,
University of Wales Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 2UW, United Kingdom; Email:
