RNAi northern experimental question

I have a question regarding northerns of RNAi lines.  Currently, we 
are finding extra
smeared bands in our northens of RNAi samples when probed for the 
gene of interest
(silenced gene). This extra banding is both larger and smaller than 
the gene of interest.
Wild type plants however show none of these extra bands/smearing and 
instead show a single
sharp band as expected. The RNA samples do not appear to be degraded. 
Has anyone else
experienced this in RNAi lines?
