<x-charset iso-8859-1>A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Position is
available in the
Microarray Lab of the Faculty of Natural- and Agricultural Sciences at
the University of Pretoria.
The research topic will be Plant Genomics, specifically using the model
plant Arabidopsis thaliana to explore gene expression in response to an
economically important bacterial pathogen. The Microarray lab is
equipped with a state-of-the-art DNA Microarrayer and Scanner, operating
through the African Centre for Gene Technologies (ACGT) Microarray
service (http://fabinet.up.ac.za/microarray/ ). Microarrays take
genomic sequence information (which in this case has been completed for
both the host and the pathogen) one step further by enabling massively
parallel analysis of gene expression.
The ongoing study is being carried out in collaboration with CNRS-INRA,
Toulouse in France, and is funded by CNRS and the Agropolis Advanced
Research Platform in France, as well as the NRF and UP in South Africa.
The postdoctoral fellow will work with an established multidisciplinary
research team drawn from the Department of Botany, the Department of
Microbiology and Plant Pathology and the Forestry and Agricultural
Biotechnology Institute (FABI). The successful candidate would be
expected to spend some time supervising postgraduate students.
Preferred, but not essential skills include experience in plant
pathology, especially phytotron/glasshouse-based pathosystems,
experimentation with the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, transcriptome
analysis and microarray data analysis. The research will be carried out
in the fully-equipped Microarray laboratory in the Agricultural Sciences
building as well as the adjacent custom-built plant growth facilities
currently under construction.
The position is for two years and can be filled from 1 March 2003.
Please apply by forwarding a complete CV with contact details of three
