Fixed term contract to 31 March 2020, with an extension up to a maximum of 6 months subject to approval from the funder.

Closing date: 17 May 2018.

We are recruiting a Bioinformatician with excellent communication skills to work on banana and enset (Ensete ventricosum; an orphan crop related to banana from Ethiopia) genomics. This position is jointly funded through Royal Society UK Global Challenges Research Fund Newton funds and seeks to (i) use comparative genomics to look for disease resistance, and other important agronomic traits in banana and enset, (ii) compare the evolution enset and banana genomes and (iv) undertake whole genome sequencing of banana pathogens.

The post is part of a collaborative project between Warwick researchers, Prof. Murray Grant, Dr. Vardis Ntoukakis and Dr. David Studholme (Exeter University) and our collaborators at the Southern Agricultural Research Institute in Ethiopia (SAR; enset genomics) and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore India (banana genomics). The project may involve visits to TNAU or SARI.

We seek applicants with a PhD which involved a large component of bioinformatics or genomics/population genetics. A good understanding of comparative genomics and experience of analysing Next-Gen sequence data (primarily short read data) is essential, and ideally the candidate will have a biology background. Some experience in programming in R, Perl/Python, or C/C++ is desirable, as is previous experience in undertaking collaborative projects or genotyping by sequencing studies.

Informal enquiries: Prof. Murray Grant (M.Grant from warwick.ac.uk<mailto:M.Grant from warwick.ac.uk>) or Dr. Vardis Ntoukakis (V.Ntoukakis from warwick.ac.uk<mailto:V.Ntoukakis from warwick.ac.uk>)
