1. SCIENCE NEWS
===========================================================================

- Bacteria 'Home' to Water and Light
http://www.bio.com/LinkRedirector.jhtml?link=1
The desert's soil turns visibly green following the rare desert rain as
photosynthesizing cyanobacteria suddenly hydrate. Lying a few millimeters
down, these primitive prokaryotes quickly migrate en mass to the surface
for an hour or so of light exposure until the dirt begins to dry. It was
assumed that the organisms' behavior could be explained by common
light-responsive behavior, but new research reported in Nature
demonstrates a more complicated mechanism.

- Interaction of Coxsackievirus B3 with CAR Receptor
http://www.bio.com/LinkRedirector.jhtml?link=2
As part of an ongoing effort to understand how viruses infect cells,
scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National
Laboratory have deciphered the molecular-level interaction between
coxsackievirus-which infects the heart, brain, pancreas, and
other organs-and the human cell protein to which it attaches.

- Molecular Link Found Between Alzheimer's, Parkinson's
http://www.bio.com/LinkRedirector.jhtml?link=3
The proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease
interact to enhance each other's distinct degenerative effects, indicating
that therapies blocking the production or accumulation of either protein
may have broader benefits than previously thought, researchers report in
the September 25, 2001 online issue of the Proceedings of the Academy of
Sciences.

- An Interview with Ruedi Aebersold: The Role of Mass Spectrometry in
Proteomics Research
http://www.bio.com/LinkRedirector.jhtml?link=4
Dr. Aebersold is internationally recognized for his work in analytical
protein biochemistry and proteomics. Dr. Aebersold is a founding member
of the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. Bio.com's
Robert Frederickson recently sat down with Dr. Aebersold to discuss mass
spectrometry and its important role in proteomics research.

- Bioinformatics Concerns and Venture Capital
http://www.bio.com/LinkRedirector.jhtml?link=6
Given the importance of venture capital (VC) to the success of a new
business, it is essential for bioinformatics startups to understand the
factors that VC firms will consider in deciding whether to invest in the
new business. Understanding these factors, as well as the process for
applying for VC funding, will maximize the business' probability of
receiving the desired funding.
