Second Hemiptera-Plant Interactions Symposium
University of California, Riverside (UCR), June 22-25, 2014
The Registration and Abstract Submission pages are now open for the upcoming
interdisciplinary Symposium on Hemiptera-Plant and Hemipteran-Plant Pathogen Interactions
(http://HPIS2014.ucr.edu). In addition to the newly opened Registration and Abstract
Submission pages, the website contains travel information and descriptions of a variety
accommodations from economical to elegant for your visit. The symposium is organized into
five sections:
Phloem and Xylem Physiology and Vascular Sap-Feeding Hemipterans
Interactions Between Plants and Non-Vascular-Feeding Hemipterans
Transmission of Plant Pathogens by Hemipteran Vectors
Molecular Biology of Hemipteran-Plant Interactions
Interactions Among Hemipterans, Their Symbionts and Host Plants
Each section will be highlighted by internationally renowned plenary speakers. The 15 plenary
speakers are listed on the website. Each section also will include submitted oral and poster
presentations from participants. We encourage you to submit an abstract for a presentation
which can be done on the website's Abstract Submission page. Travel grants are available to
help defray the cost of travel to the symposium.
The symposium also has two satellite workshops. A three-day Electrical Penetration Graph
(EPG) workshop will be held on the UCR campus on June 19-21, 2014. The EPG workshop will
include morning lectures on principles of EPG, interpretation of EPG data and research
application of EPG, followed by afternoon hands-on training in wiring insects and recording
EPGs. The EPG workshop will be conducted by Freddy Tjallingii, the developer of the DC EPG
and the world's leading expert of aphid feeding behavior. A half-day Omics workshop will
follow the symposium on June 26, 2014. The Omics workshop features four leaders in the fields
of proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics, and metabolomics. The speakers will overview the
rapid advances in these disciplines and their applications to plant-insect-pathogen-endosymbiont
interactions.
