If anyone wishes to follow up on Debbie's suggestion and read
Richard Cytowic's stuff on synesthesia check out the paperback
collection of his essays published in 1993 by Warner books.  The
collection is titled "The man who tasted shapes."  Not much hard
data but some interesting speculations.
