Treatment for Fluid in Child's Ear

If a young child, age six, is diagnosed with *uninfected* fluid in one
ear, what kind of treatment is indicated usually? If surgery is the case,
what kind of time frame is allowed for investigating alternative
treatments and what kind of alternative treatments would these be? Does
the matter ever resolve itself? I realize this is an incredibly simplified
question for a complex matter, but this layman would appreciate getting a
start on it. Thanks in advance.
