>SCIENCE AND RESEARCH CAREER FORUM
>
>
>The American Speech-Language, Hearing Association is conducting a Science
and Research Career Forum during the 1999 Annual ASHA Convention. This
Forum is designed to provide information about the pursuit of a research
career in communication sciences and disorders (CSD). The 3-hour session
will feature panel presentations by senior researchers and poster
presentations by students currently engaged in research activities. The
Forum is particularly appropriate for undergraduate, master*s, and doctoral
students, as well as clinicians interested in incorporating research into
their professional activities.
>
>The Forum is designed to promote science and research careers.
Presentations by senior researchers will focus on 1) characteristics of a
researcher, 2) the process of developing research ideas, 3) types of
research being conducted in CSD, and 4) typical experiences of a researcher.
>
>Students interested in presenting their current research activities are
encouraged to apply for the travel fellowship. The goal of the fellowship
component is to provide students an opportunity to engage in informal
dialogue and receive constructive feedback about their current research
interests. In addition, travel fellows will have an opportunity to network
with other students having similar research interests, and to establish
contacts with senior researchers that may assist them in developing goals
for advancing their research career.
>
>A total of twenty fellows will be selected. Applicants must complete an
application form, submit a statement describing how attendance at the Forum
would help further their research endeavors, submit an abstract describing
their current or completed research activity (the study must be completed
by November), and submit a letter of support from an advisor or supervisor.
The abstract should include a statement of the purpose, research
questions, design, subject description, methodology, and findings.
>
>The Science and Research Career Forum will be held in San Francisco on
Saturday,
>November 20th from 8:30 am * 12:00 noon. Funds of up to $1,035 will be
available to cover convention registration, transportation, meals, and
lodging expenses for each travel fellow.
>
>Deadline for receipt of applications is April 15, 1999. Selection of
travel fellows will be completed by May 30, 1999.
