"Red Rain" on ABI377 Gel File

Yes, I've seen it.  Red rain (according to ABI) is caused by dirty
plates. 
The gel lifts  slightly at the end of a long run, and is no longer
cooled, so the laser
burns holes in it (true, apparently!).

The solution is to periodically (say, every 10 gels) wash the plates in
0.1M
NaOH, then in 0.1M HCl, which lifts off any crap that has adsorbed to the
plates
from tap water etc.  Also, something which worked for me is to lower the
run
temp to 48 degC.  I've seen no rain at all since.
