PCR sequencing

I'm new to the autosequencing newsgroup and I'm sure this has been discussed
before.  What is the best protocol for direct sequencing of PCR products ?
We have been using the QiaQuick gel extraction columns for purifying PCR
products, but the sequencing success rate has only been about 50%.  And even
some of those sequences are questionable at best.  Sequencing of plasmid
clones works spectacular more than 90% of the time.  Can this kind of success
be achieved with direct sequencing ??
