Sequence analysis software recommendations??

I'm looking for software (either free of that I can use on someone's
system) to help me compare and align sequence fragments. I have no
experience using software for this. GCG has been recommended but I
haven't found a site where I can use it and I can't afford the rather
steep price. I'm hoping to find something for the Windows platform. Any
help will be greatly appreciated.
