We run 48 cm gels and so don't use the front plate, but I have occasionally seen burnt gel at the top, and I can report that the combs burn rather well! Our problem was due to arcing after the buffer evaporated in a hot lab, so you could check for causes of arcing - gaps in the gel, lost buffer etc. Hope this helps, Anthony.
