This was also a historic (8-) opportunity to see how the EMBL
UUEN/DECODEing software fares when the file crosses an Internet -> BITNET
The encoded file was protected against trimming of trailing blanks.
The carats (hex 5E) were converted to an 8-bit ASCII character (E3) and this
was evident from the table at the top of the file (what it actually displays
as depends on how the system and display software handle 8-bit characters that
were expected to be 7-bit). The VMS version of the decoder could not handle
the file until after a global search and replace (E3 -> 5E) was performed.
I realize it was a DOS executable, not for VMS, but this information
may be relevant to how the moderators set up, and arrange for mirroring of,
the archives for bionet.software.sources.
