Xarchie software... hit me with that ftp stick.

This posting is to announce the release of xarchie, version 1.3.
Xarchie is an X11 browser-based interface to the Archie Internet
information service. It allows you to search for, find, and retrieve
files available for anonymous ftp at thousands of sites.

The distribution can be ftp'd from the following sites:

  export.lcs.mit.edu (18.24.0.12) contrib/xarchie-1.3.tar.Z
  cs.rochester.edu (192.5.53.209) pub/xarchie-1.3.tar.Z
  ftp.cs.widener.edu (147.31.254.132) pub/archie/xarchie-1.3.tar.Z
  nisc.sesqui.net (128.241.0.8) pub/xarchie-1.3.tar.Z
  archie.mcgill.ca (132.206.2.3) archie/clients/xarchie-1.3.tar.Z
  nic.funet.fi (128.214.6.100) /pub/X11/contrib/xarchie-1.3.tar.Z
  cs.huji.ac.il (132.65.6.5) pub/archie-clients/xarchie-1.3.tar.Z
  ftp.kuis.kyoto-u.ac.jp (130.54.20.1) net/archie/xarchie-1.3.tar.Z

Please use a site near you when retrieving xarchie (and when using it
be sure to use an appropriate Archie host -- there are several). If
other sites, especially non-North American sites, make the package
available, perhaps they could announce it.

If you do not have ftp access you'll have to use one of the
ftp-by-mail services to get the distribution. I do not have plans to
post the entire package at present, and I will not e-mail it
separately either. Sorry, but you should still be able to get it.

** Please read the README carefully before doing anything, and make
** sure that the newest version of the application defaults (Xarchie.ad)
** are being found.

There is a patch kit from version 1.2 on cs.rochester.edu, but it's
bigger than the entire 1.3 distribution since so much has changed.
Take my word for it, you don't want to go the patch route.

Another things is that xarchie will not run on versions of X that are
not at least R4 with *all* fixes applied. It also runs under R5. If
you get a core dump, please check that your X is up-to-date as per the
messages printed by xarchie when catching the fault.

Thanks to Brendan Kehoe, Cliff Neuman, Alan Emtage and others credited
in the README for their help. Thanks also to Amos Shapira, Petri
Ojala, Bill Manning, and Motonori Nakamura for help distributing this
version. Version 1.4 will be released around Christmas, I hope.
