font creation help

Friends,
   I need software for the Macintosh that will allow me to design
alternative characters to represent nucleotides in nucleic acids
and amino acids in proteins.  If you can, please point me to sources (commercial
,
share, or public) of font creation programs.  Candid evaluations
of those programs will also be appreciated.
