: I was told so time ago by people at NCBI that there are no plans to do
: so, but also that this might be reconsidered.
:
: I will add myself that FASTA and BLAST use different database formats,
: and this consumes lots of disk space. As the databases continue to
: grow it would be nice to consolidate formats for searching programs.
:
: Don't forget that EMBL provides a FASTA server at the address
: fasta at embl-heidelberg.de. The added load of everyone migrating there
: from genbank.bio.net on top of their current users might be a bit much
: however. I'll leave further comments to the folks from EMBL and NCBI.

There is another way of doing FASTA searches. The FLAT server in Japan
also provides FASTA searches using email. This is featured in my UNIX program
mailfasta3.0 which can be found at the iubio archive and our own FTP archive
bio.vu.nl:/molbio. I also put up an gopher hole (grampus.bio.vu.nl port 9001)
via which mailfasta can be reached.

You can get help from the FASTA server in Japan by sending help in an email
to flat-netserv at smlab.eg.gunma-u.ac.jp

Hope this helps,
