Scanner recommendation?

Suggestions regarding a scanner capable of taking images of xray gel films?
We are interested in spending in the range of $1500, and would like to be
able to capture 600dpi if possible with 256 shades of gray.  
Color is not necessary.  Any advice would be appreciated.
