Dearchiving ftp files

Hi

Could someone out there give me  a play by play guide to dearchiving files that
i have downloaded by ftp from remote servers. Im new to the PC archive world
and it seems that there are lot of different archiving/encoding formats
like .zoo .tar.z .uue .zip and the list goes on....

Q. Where can i get the software to decode these files?
   Are there any special considerations i have to bear in mind when
   downloading from the servers.

Also could someone recommend a good down to earth seq. analysis program for the
PC.
