Here is an short blurb -- just a summary aimed at an
Indiana U audience. I put it together quickly, accuracy
and good descriptions may be lacking here ---------------
Internet Gopher is an information distribution system. It
combines features of electronic bulletin board services and
databases, allowing you to either browse a hierarchy of
information, or to search for the information you need using
full-text indices. Gopher can also store links to public
Telnet services, phone book servers, WAIS and more.
Internet Gopher is a very simple but powerful way to bring
information from anywhere, locally or world-wide, to your
personal computer. It is easy to set up gopher servers, and
very easy to use the gopher clients.
The IUBio Biology Archive is available through Internet
Gopher. You will find links to other biology gophers, and
all other gopher servers, at this site. Through the IUBio
Biology Gopher, you can, for instance, fetch sequence
entries from Genbank or Swiss Protein by accession number,
name, author, keywords.
There is much diverse information stored on various Gopher
servers: computer documentation, phone books, news, weather,
library databases, books, recipes, etc.
The Best of the BioGophers
Here is a selection of some of the 125 or more Gopher
servers that specialize in biological sciences. You can
find links to these in the IUBio Gopher Other-Bio-Gophers
