Synthetic DNA sequence trees

We are interested in papers or software dealing with the generation
of synthetic sequence data leading to the evolution of lineages. The
goal is to use them as input into tree-building algorithms, partly
as a teaching exercise, partly for a research tool to experiment
with various tree building packages.
