This doesn't answer your question at all... but there may be a simpler
solution to doing sequence searches on the mac: using a BLAST client
which does the actual searches at NCBI. The following is excerpted
from:

7. BLAST Network Server
***********************

Last change : December 29, 1993

This service is available for use from any computer connected to the
Internet. Client interfaces are available for SunOS, Solaris, SGI IRIX
and other UNIX platforms, Macintosh with MacTCP, DEC VMS (with limited
TCP/IP driver support), and Microsoft Windows.

BLAST network services are currently offered on an experimental
basis. Server and client software should be considered as under
development and subject to change. Users will receive ample
notification in advance of major revisions or changes of service.

To access the NCBI BLAST network server users must first register and
then obtain the BLAST client software appropriate for their hardware
platform.
