You have to set the file type to binary in both kermit and on the unix 
machine from which you are downloading the image file.  In kermit set the 
file type to binary with the data fork.  But you must also tell the 
computer that you are getting the image from that the file is binary.

Also make sure the picture is not an encoded image, if it is decode it first.
