Very few programs can deal directly with 16-bit TIFF files. Molecular
Dynamics has a modified version of NIH Image (for Macs, version 1.4.1
or so of NIH Image) that will accept the 16-bit TIFF files (*.GEL from
the PhosphorImager, Densitometer, etc.)
The MDPP package from Ross Smith (anonymous FTP to mcclb0.med.nyu.edu
although the address will be changing in the near future) can also
read 16-bit TIFF files. It currently runs under VMS, Ultrix, and
DEC's OSF/1 using a Motif X-Window interface.
Otherwise you have to do the 16-bit to 8-bit conversion and work with
teh 8-bit files. If your data does not span too great a range or
you're only interested in using the file for a figure, the 8-bit
version should be fine.
