GNU Emacs is arguably one of the best editors ever and, at the present
distribution cost, represents infinite value for money. The sources for
GNU Emacs are widely available from ftp sites and are designed to be
configurable for a variety of platforms. You may even be able to pick up
the package from other local sites.
Emacs is very flexible in design, and while it comes with its own standard
keyboard command interface, there are many routines available (in the public
domain also) which will make emacs emulate virtually any other editor.
