Catalog for Pc/Mac scientific software ?

The best way to find freeware/shareware that I have found is simply do a 
YAHOO or Alta Vista search for a particular type of shareware with a search 
string like:
contour shareware
 -or-
html shareware
 -or-
"paint shop pro 3.0" shareware
I have not been skunked by this approach.
