wanted: dna/protein analysis software

Are there any DNA/Protein analysis software-packages (commercial/
shareware/freeware) around that are cheaper than DNASIS/PROSIS or PC-GENE 
but still offer most of their functionality (database access is not 
required, neither are any CD rom database updates of EMBL or GENBANK).
Would be interesting to hear about programs we may have missed!
