NASA PATHFINDER DATA SET PRODUCT GENERATION
AND ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT

Issued December 23, 1994
Letters of Intent Due February 1, 1995
Proposals Due March 10, 1995

NASA Research Announcement Soliciting Research Proposals
For Research Commencing on or after July 1, 1995

This NASA Research Announcement (NRA) solicits research
proposals from all sources for 1) generation of research-
quality, consistent data sets suitable for global change
research, and 2) development of innovative, scientific, data-
processing algorithms or algorithm components capable of
generating additional or advanced global change data sets.
All data sets produced and software developed through this
NRA will be in the public domain and are expected to be made
available in an accessible and affordable manner through
NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System
(EOSDIS).

The main goal of the Pathfinder Program is to make research-
quality global change data sets more easily available to the
science and environmental communities for use in research and
assessments. All Pathfinder data sets involve space-based
observations, and are subject to the following requirements:
stable calibration of the raw data should be attainable; and,
when data from multiple instruments are involved, consistent
intercalibration among instruments should be possible. The
resultant time series of geophysical product data sets are
made available as they are produced.

NASA's Pathfinder data set activity is part of the
Pathfinders and Product Generation Program within the Earth
Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Branch of the
Operations, Data and Information Systems (ODIS) Division
within NASA's Office of Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE). The
Pathfinders and Product Generation Program also funds other
NASA-sponsored long-term data product generation activities.

Proposals will be evaluated through scientific and technical
peer review. They will also be reviewed for scientific and
programmatic relevance to the research interests of NASA's
Office of Mission to Planet Earth and the United States
Global Change Research Program (USGCRP). Selection is
anticipated by June 15, 1995.
