d^2 or d-squared

There was a recent reference to a request for information on d^2
an algorithm used for DNA comparison, clustering,searching etc..

This was posted to one of the bionet boards. I have recently been 
informed that someone was seeking information on this from the UK.

Could anyone please point the requestor to me?
