image processing source code

I am looking for public domain/freeware image processing algorithms in C
source code.  The image processing that I need to do is quite specific but
there are places were "canned" algorithms would be very useful (e.g.
median filtering, edge detection, etc ...).  If you know of a FTP site were 
I can obtain some C coded routines please let me know.
