Species Distribution Mapping Progrms

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew of species distribution mapping programs.
i have lookked at the demo of Mapit, but I am not sure how good the detail
is especially on streams and small lakes.  Has anyone tried this program
and what is your opionion of it?  

i have not looked at the emap program yet, but it looks a bit cumbersome.  

Does anyone know of other mapping programs that are relatively cheap?  I
am not quite ready to get into GIS yet.

I would appreciate any suggestions people might have.
