clustalw bug in linux but not irix

Hello,

I've discovered a problem with clustalw under Linux, it gives
wierd c-terminal insertions like this:

abcdefdfasdf-dah
abcdefdfasdf-ed-ag
-bcdefdfasdf-ed-ag
--cdefdfasdfg
            ^  ^
           whole columns of inserts
           corresponding to the end of sequences

it works fine under IRIX.
has anyone else encountered this? 
(and save me trying to fix it?)
