My suggestion would be to look into using DNA-GUI, a most impressive
program written by Ken Clark, Washington University, St. Louis. This
program has been written for the X Window environment; it reads
digitized gel images (Tiff format), displays them, and offers
many options, among them identifying bands in the gel, spatial
normalization of the gel (using two or three marker lanes at
appropriate positions), and writing all bands and the respective
estimated molecular weights of the corresponding DNA into a file.
