Bioinformatics: Merging Biology and Computer Science

October 21-23, 1999 North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC
November 11-13, 1999 The US Military Academy, West Point, NY

                                    presented by

                     The National Biotechnology Information Facility

This workshop is an overview of the bioinformatics/computational
molecular biology tools available for use over the Internet. It is
intended for university faculty and staff in the areas of molecular
biology and biochemistry and graduate students who desire an
understanding of protein and nucleic acid sequence analysis, but have
little knowledge of what tools are available on the Internet and how to
use them.

Participants will:

become familiar with the most commonly used nucleic acid and
protein databases and analysis tools on the Internet.
participate in hands-on computer labs to practice the use of these
learn skills that will allow them to explore and exploit the more
specific tools that may be useful to their own projects.

Participants should be familiar with the fields of molecular biology and
biochemistry. They should also have the following computer skills: be
able to use an Internet browser such as Netscape or Microsoft Explorer,
be proficient with a text editor or word processing program, know how to
download software and information from the Internet, and be familiar
with computer applications such as ftp and telnet.

Space for each workshop is limited to 25 participants.

All applications must include:

the applicant's name, address, phone, email address and any other
pertinant contact information.
applicant's position and area of research or study.
the location and date of the workshop desired.
a letter that describes the applicant's need for the workshop and
intended use of the knowledge and
     skills they will acquire.

Specific information about each workshop will be mailed to the selected

A limited number of travel (mileage only; no air travel) and lodging
scholarships will be available. If you
have a need for this type of scholarship, please include a statement of
need with your application.

The application deadlines will be:

September 20, 1999 for the NCCU Workshop.
September 31, 1999 for the West Point Workshop.

Selected applicants will be notified within 1 week after the application

The registration fee will be due 2 weeks before the workshop begins.
Registration fees are:
