The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute is looking for Systems' Administrators 
and Research Software Developers:

The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute is a multi-disciplinary center of 
excellence in the rapidly developing field of bioinformatics, which draws upon 
the expertise of research professionals in computational biology, computer 
science, statistical genetics, metabolic engineering, and plant physiology.  
The Institute, which is located in Blacksburg, Virginia on the campus of 
Virginia Tech, utilizes a broad-based approach to increase knowledge of 
plant, agricultural, and biomedical genomics. The Institute will generate new 
research data, implement and serve effective databases, develop novel 
search algorithims, and design innovative user interface tools. We are 
currently looking for dynamic IT professionals.

SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR (7636T)   
 
The Systems Administrator is responsible for designing the institute's 
information system, support, security, and recovery, and for building a 
cohesive and effective support team.  This position will also be responsible 
for designing and coordinating system requirements for interim locations and 
the design and construction of a new, permanent facility.   

Requirements include a bachelor's degree in CE, EE, CS  or an appropriate 
hard science or engineering discipline or equivalent education, training, and 
experience; systems administration experience in a networked and internet 
environment which demonstrates security, troubleshooting, and data 
recovery skills; experience with Unix, Windows 95/98/2000/NT, Mac OS8 
&9; and excellent prioritizing and organizational skills.  This position requires 
a person with the desire to support multiple platforms in an innovative, 
research environment and the demonstrated ability to use initiative and 
sound judgement to design and implement solutions.  To be effective, the 
selected candidate must work collaboratively; demonstrate composure, the 
ability to balance patience with initiative, and the ability to balance openness 
and creativity while ensuring system integrity and security.  Preference given 
for a master's degree in a relevant field; programming experience with 
scripting languages; and for network design, disaster recovery, 
telecommunications support, and budget management experience.

RESEARCH SOFTWARE DEVELOPER (7637T)  

The Research Software Developer is responsible for working collaboratively 
with research scientists to convert scientific requirements into software 
designs and for writing software that accesses and analyzes the results of 
scientific research and achieves the design requirements. 

Requirements include a bachelor's degree in EE, CE, CS, or an appropriate 
hard science or engineering discipline, or equivalent experience; experience 
writing object-oriented code in a product development environment 
demonstrating knowledge of and experience using one or more software 
development process; extensive programming experience in C, C++ , and/or 
PERL; experience using web technologies (HTML, XML, CGI, Java, JScript); 
experience with relational database design, implementation, and testing; 
experience designing and executing computational experiments and working 
in a scientific computing environment with scientists from diverse disciplines; 
demonstrated project management, organizational, and  prioritization skills; 
the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively; and excellent written and 
verbal communication skills. Preference given for commercial experience 
writing object-oriented code in a product development environment; 
experience implementing algorithms to solve biological problems; experience 
using sequence analysis tools (e.g., BLAST, FASTA) and public sequence 
databases; skills in statistical data analysis (univariate & multivariate,  
hypothesis testing) and the ability to use statistical analysis software; 
experience in bioinformatics; a research publication record; and a M.S. or 
Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) especially if one of the degrees is in the 
biological sciences.
