1950s SF Novel 'The Haploids'

I read, but barely remember, a Sci-Fi novel in the early 50s when I was 11
or 12 called 'The Haploids' by Jerry Sohl (I did a web search). It dealt
mostly with the politics of women who no longer needed men (as I recall).
But as I remember an XX chromosome is a female, an XY is a male and a YY
would be a haploid. I know they do this with plants (from the search for
the book) but what happens in animals and what would the current speculation
be for humans?
