New directions in biofilm research

Dear Bob and other biofilmers,

In response to your challenge:
I attended the meeting in Halifax. The presentations made at this meeting
reflected the fact that most studies of biofilms concern those in
liquid-saturated environments. In fact, the several papers concerning
modeling of biofilm stucture assummed continued presence of a fluid. Hence,
I think that more research is needed on biofilms in environments where a
fluid is not continuously present (called unsaturated environments by some
researchers). More precisely:

1. How do punctuated fluid conditions effect biofilm structure?
2. Can we conceive of alternatives to Robbin's-like devices to permit
studies of biofilms in nonsaturated environments?
