Wed Mar 28 10:46:44 EST 2001

Dear Colleagues,

I am taking the liberty of forwarding this postdoc position ad from Kalai
Mathee at Florida International University. Kalai is doing some really
interesting and novel work with Pseudomonas virulence. I commend Kalai and
her department at FIU highly.

 > Postdoctoral position in Mathee Lab
 >Pseudomonas aeruginosa Pathogenesis
 >The ongoing research in the lab involves understanding the chronic
 >infection with the opportunistic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa that
 >remains the most common cause of morbidity and mortality among patients
 >with cystic fibrosis (CF) and diffused panbronchiolitis (DPB). Although CF
 >occurs in all ethnic groups and geographic locations, its highest=
 >is among Caucasians. It is the most common and a fatal inherited disease.
 >DPB appears to be a complex genetic disease of the Far East. We are
 >addressing the chronic infection at a molecular level by looking at (i)=
 >mechanisms that promote spontaneous conversion of nonmucoid P. aeruginosa
 >to a fatal mucoid or alginate-producing form, (ii) the mechanisms
 >responsible for overexpression of b-lactamase genes that contribute to
 >antibiotic resistance, and (iii) community behavior of bacterial=
 >promoted by biofilm formation and quorum sensing molecules. I am also
 >interested in finding alternative therapies such as (i) therapeutic use of
 >ginseng as an alternative medicine against bacterial infection, and (ii)
 >identification of antibacterial compounds produced in the rich flora and
 >fauna of South Florida. I am looking for a candidate with a good training
 >in molecular biology and biochemistry.
