Hi John: When we've looked at central venous catheters, stents, etc.
with S. epi and S. aureus biofilms, we've found cipro and vanco to be
reasonable for penetrating the biofilm; however, they still seem to
leave a persister population that has a tendency to reseed the biofilm.
Our recommended strategy has not been to find a magic anti-biofilm
antibiotic so to speak (that would be nice, and they are in development,
but it'll probably be awhile before they become FDA approved), but to
design a dosing strategy to deal with the persisters.
