If there's a big pile of reference materials concerning the BIONET
newsgroups, I'd think that WAIS would be a good mechanism to store the
data in. WAIS (Wide Area Information Server, from Brewster Kahle at
Thinking Machines) lets you do full text searches on documents where
you get back not a boolean "yes or no" but a ranking scale as to how
appropriate the document was to your search. You'd store things like
frequently asked questions, bibliographies, reference lists, ftp site
lists etc in a WAIS server somewhere; ideally the documents would be
rich with the particular jargon of the field.

The thought occurs to me that someone looking for the right newsgroup
to post to could run a quick WAIS search before and see which
newsgroup postings yielded the most hits -- that would give you an
idea of where the discussion is going on so you target your posting
most effectively.
