Mac files via ftp

Hi

A friend would like to know, as would I, how to get files
destined for a mac via ftp.  I am familar with getting
them for ibms, as well as setting switches such as bin and
tenex.
What are the comparable parameters for a Mac? Are mac files
compressed differently?  What is an hqx file?  Does this mean
I need some type of mac version of kermit? Is there a FAQlist
for macs and their ilk?
