any models of individuals all doing something at the same time?

Suppose you observe a group of individuals (organisms, processes,
pieces of apparatus, whatever) which all do something (like mate, in
the case of certain organisms) at a given time. Are there any studies
that people are aware of which explore how this kind of entrainment
can arise through evolution? I am thinking of computer models, perhaps
a CA (cellular automata) approach. If anyone is aware of any work done
on this, please email to mlevin at husc8.harvard.edu.
