how was mdx mouse discovered????

hi there -
	I'm doing a paper on mouse models for human diseases for my
developmental bio class.  One example I read about was the mdx mouse - which is
a poor model because it does not exhibit the same phenotype for the same gene
error as humans do.  
	Anyway - this is my question - The mdx mouse does not exhibit any
visible symptoms - so how was it discovered?  Thanks in advance for any answers!
