A workshop entitled "Application of Fractals in Soil Chemistry"
will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 6, preceding
the 1993 ASA-CSSA-SSSA annual meetings in Cincinnati, Ohio. The workshop
is being sponsored by Division S-2 (Soil Chemistry) and will consist of a
series of coordinated presentations by recognized experts and investigators
who are applying fractal geometry in their research. Confirmed speakers
include: Dr. B.B. Mandelbrot, IBM, USA (originator of fractal geometry and
author of the well known book, The Fractal Geometry of Nature ); Dr. M.
Sernetz, Justus Liebig-Universitat, Germany; Dr. M. Borkovec, Federal
Institute of Technology (ETH), Switzerland; Dr. H. Van Damme, Director,
CRSD-CNRS, Orleans, France; Dr. C. C. Barton, USGS, USA; Dr. J. Rice,
Department of Chemistry, South Dakota State University; Dr. Phil Barak,
Soil Science, Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, and Dr. N. Senesi, Istituto di
Chimica Agraria, Universita di Bari, Italy.
The workshop is designed as an introduction to fractal geometry and
how it can be applied to such topics as surface characterization,
diffusion, polymerization and aggregation, dissolution, porosity, molecular
adsorption and flow through porous media. The intent of the workshop is to
answer the question, "What is fractal geometry and how can I use it in my
The registration fee is $135 ($75 for students) and must be paid
for in advance. Details concerning the workshop will be published in the
July 1993 Agronomy News. Information for non-ASA-CSSA-SSSA members
(including registration form and list of available hotels) can be obtained
from David Kral, American Society of Agronomy, 677 S. Segoe Rd., Madison WI
53711-1086. Phone: 608/273-8080 (FAX only 608/273-2021). The registration
deadline is currently set at September 15, 1993. There will be no
registration at the door.
