Watson & Crick did not use the term "duplex" in their first two
papers. In fact that term was not used during the 50's in any of the
classic papers on DNA structure, replication, etc. Nearly all other
possible synonyms were applied, but not duplex.
According to the OED 2nd edition, "RNA-RNA duplexes" was written in
1963, PNAS 50, 910. For "DNA duplex", see Nature 224, 768 (1969) by
Shapiro et al. on lac operon DNA isolation.
