sense of sight/vision

I don't know if this is the right newsgroup to post this message to, and
if it isn't, I apologize.  I have a question that is bugging me for a long
time and I'm hoping that someone out there might have the answer to it.

Why is appearance of objects seem different when they are at a distance?

For instance, mountains seem bluish at a distance.  But up close, they are 
brown (soil) and green (trees).

Please reply to this message if anyone out there has an answer.  Thanks.
